SASCO is Currently seeking a Process Chemist/Engineer:
The SASCO Chemical Group is a specialty chemical manufacturer headquartered in Albany, GA that produces a wide array of chemical process aides and functional additives used in the making of elastomeric goods. To meet the increasing demands for its products to the rubber industry SASCO is expanding both its facilities and technical capabilities. To that end SASCO is opening a new Innovation & Technology Center in Macon, GA that will house its research and development labs as well as its piloting scale-up facilities to carry out its new product and process development initiatives. SASCO is therefore seeking a highly motivated R&D Process Chemist/Engineer to support its process development and piloting efforts. This R&D Process Chemist/Engineer position will be based in the new Macon I&TC facility where bench scale and pilot scale process optimization studies will be carried out on its new chemical products or on existing chemical processes that need quality, throughput and/or cost reduction improvements. These process studies will be carried out in close collaboration with the product development team to insure that both chemistry and process hardware considerations are both taken into account in the design and optimization of those processes. The R&D Process Chemist/Engineer will then be responsible for transferring the new product/process technologies to SASCO’s Albany, GA production facility and will establish the plant SOP’s and process control parameters for their successful manufacture there. The ability to make adjustments in the chemistries, to recommend equipment additions or equipment modifications to the plant, and to implement instrumental based process control strategies are essential to the job. The ideal candidate could be either a degreed Chemist or an Engineer but would have a strong background in R&D chemical principles and a strong working knowledge of chemical process equipment in a production environment. It is essential that the candidate have a strong R&D background and displays the innate ability to utilize a research based methodology when addressing process problems or new product scale-up issues. Work related experience in colloidal surface chemistry, emulsification technology and with inorganic/mineral pigment dispersions generated from the use of high-shear mixing processes would be a plus. Prior experience with the blending, surface coating and materials handling of fine particulate powders is also desired. The ability to utilize statistical methods in the analysis of test data and in the execution of DOE based experimentation is also required. Strong problem solving skills must be exhibited to resolve internal production problems, product scale-up issues or customer complaint issues in a timely manner whenever they arise. The ability to interface effectively with R&D, production, quality control as well as sales personnel is therefore essential. The position will also assist the product development team in the identification and qualification of competitive raw materials from alternative suppliers.
The successful candidate should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in a technical discipline such as Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Mineral Process Engineering and at least 5 years of industrial work related experience in a R&D piloting type environment. Candidates having background and training in the areas of dispersion & emulsification, surfactant & surface science, particle engineering, formulation art, new product scale-up, Statistical Process Control and the rheological properties of colloidal systems would be a definite plus for this position. A self-motivated individual that has the ability to design and carry out detailed experimental plans and execute complex projects with minimal supervision is required. Good oral and written communication skills, attention to technical detail and good computer skills are also required. The position will entail some travel between Macon and Albany as project priorities dictate. This job is a newly created R&D position that will report to the Director of R&D and will be filled at a level appropriate to the experience, training and skills of the candidate.
